Welcome

Psychotherapy

I am a board certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist and psychotherapist with a private practice in SE Portland. I offer an integrative treatment approach that centers around psychotherapy, including psychoanalytic psychotherapy. This form of talk therapy uses the principles of psychoanalysis to help a person make sense out of confusing, overwhelming, and seemingly unrelated feelings and experiences. The new ways of "seeing" that come from this type of treatment provide relief from painful psychological symptoms, in addition to a greater sense of agency, acceptance, and growth. I enjoy working with individuals of all ages and stages of development, and all are welcome. If you are interested in learning more, please contact me.

Services

  • I specialize in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis for adolescents (12 yo and above) and adults.
  • Psychoanalysis is the most immersive talk therapy treatment available, and though it typically requires a commitment of at least four sessions a week, the greater frequency is what leads to deeper insight and the significant and long-lasting change that differentiates this treatment from the others.
  • Psychoanalysis sits at the crossroads between science and art. I particularly enjoy working with anyone who identifies as an artist and/or values creativity and wants to engage in a creative process. I can help those who want to deepen their understanding of their creative work, or those who feel creatively blocked or shut down and need help reconnecting with that part of themselves..
  • I can also provide medication consultation and management for patients seeing me regularly for psychotherapy.
  • I am able to meet virtually by phone or video.

Training

  • I received an M.D. from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, NY.
  • I completed residency training in General Psychiatry at OHSU in Portland, OR.
  • After residency, I remained at OHSU for additional fellowship training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
  • I am currently a candidate in the Adult Psychoanalytic Training Program at Oregon Psychoanalytic Institute.

Appointments

  • I am in network for most Blue Cross Blue Shield, MODA, PacificSource, Providence, and Aetna plans. To determine if I am covered by a specific plan, please contact the insurance company directly.
  • Though some people benefit greatly from more frequent psychotherapy sessions, not every insurance company will cover multiple sessions per week. In this case, it will be the patient's responsibility to cover the cost of sessions that are not reimbursed by their insurance. For patients interested in meeting 4-5 times per week for a psychoanalysis, I can negotiate a reduced fee for the sessions not covered by insurance.

Appointments

  • Appointments are 50 minutes long.
  • I meet with people interested in becoming a new patient for at least three sessions to get a better idea of what they want help with. I provide recommendations at the end of this consultation period and then make a decision about moving forward into treatment.
  • I ask those who want psychotherapy to commit to meeting at least weekly, because meeting less often than that usually does not provide enough  momentum for a person to develop useful insights.
  • I now offer telehealth visits.

Cancellation Policy

  • I  hold the same time(s) for patients each week, so patients can count on that time being available to them. For cancellations made less than 48 hours (or two business days) in advance, I charge a fee for the reserved time. This fee ($200) is not billable to insurance and is the patient's responsibility. If it's possible to reschedule the appointment within the same week, I will waive this fee.
